Most of Tsuru City's territory is mountainous, with the city center located on flat land between mountains and valleys. Tsuru borders eight other municipalities, including Fujiyoshida and Otsuki. The city is home to Tsuru University, which means it has a large population of residents around the age of 20. This is because students who move to the city to enroll transfer their residency there. Famous attractions in the city include Tahara Falls and Soryukyo Gorge. Takaranoyama Fureai no Sato, a popular facility, offers hands-on activities that allow visitors to fully enjoy nature. The city also hosts events such as the Hassaku Festival and the Tsuru Industry Festival.
