Shunan City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, is located in the southeastern part of the prefecture, bordering Yamaguchi City, Kudamatsu City, and Shimane Prefecture. It has evolved through the merger of many regions. Specialties of the region include Kyoho grape wine, Tokuyama pufferfish, and Suo conger eel. While pufferfish fishing is popular, agriculture, including grapes and pears, is also thriving in the region. Local events include the Eigenzan Park Azalea Festival, the Tokuyama Summer Festival, and the Shunan Winter Tree Festival. Tourist attractions include Shunan City Tokuyama Zoo, home to historical sites related to the Mori clan, and Toishi Hachiman Shrine, one of the Four Great Hachiman Shrines. Hooded cranes, designated as a special natural monument, fly to the Yatsushiro Basin. Their population has been declining in recent years, and efforts are underway to increase their numbers.
