About Hagi City
Hagi City is located in northern Yamaguchi Prefecture, in the western part of the Chugoku region. Facing the Sea of Japan, it borders Shimane Prefecture to the east, Nagato City to the west, and Yamaguchi City to the south. The city includes six remote islands collectively known as Hagi and Mutsushima Village. One theory is that the city's name is a corrupted version of the camellia, the city's flower. Long ago, it developed as a castle town of the Choshu Domain, which had a 360,000 koku yield, and even today retains the town name and atmosphere of a castle town. It is also known as the site of Yoshida Shoin's private school, Shoka Juku, and has produced many leaders of the Meiji Restoration. Its main industries are tourism, agriculture, and fishing, with some areas also attracting industrial businesses. Historical heritage sites within the city, such as the ruins of Hagi Castle, its castle town, townhouses, and Shoka Sonjuku, are popular tourist spots.
