Tsuruoka City in Yamagata Prefecture was established as a new city in 2005 after a merger. Surrounded by the sea and mountains, and with a wide range of educational institutions, it is a region that combines a variety of cultures. Tsuruoka City's specialties include dadachamame beans, rice, and the local dish dongara soup. Mount Haguro is a national treasure, with 2,446 stone steps. In the summer, Yunohama Beach and Yura Beach become extremely popular. Yunohama Beach is the largest in all of Yamagata Prefecture.
