Tendo City is blessed with nature, with the Zao mountain range to the southeast and Mt. Gassan to the west. As a result, new residential areas are on the rise, making it a commuter town for the Yamagata metropolitan area. One of the city's specialties is shogi pieces, a traditional craft, with the city accounting for 95% of the national share of piece production. Fruit cultivation, including Yamagata's specialty cherries and La France pears, is also thriving. One tourist spot is the Tendo Cherry Blossom Festival, where the human shogi game held at the festival is famous. This event, in which armored figures dressed as shogi pieces play against professional knights, attracts many tourists.
