Murayama City is located in the central part of Yamagata Prefecture, and its landscape stretches from east to west. Surrounded by the Ou Mountains and the Dewa Hills, the Mogami River, known as one of Japan's three most rapid rivers, flows through its center. Murayama City's specialties include apples, La France pears, rice, and alcoholic beverages such as doburoku and sake. A popular tourist spot is Higashizawa Rose Park, home to approximately 20,000 roses of 700 varieties, which can be enjoyed from early June. Higashizawa Rose Park has also been selected as one of Japan's 100 most fragrant landscapes. The annual Tokunai Festival is named after Mogami Tokunai, a northern explorer and scholar. The Tokunai Bayashi performance, featuring clappers, is impressive.
