Okura Village, Mogami District, is located in the southern part of the Mogami region in northern Yamagata Prefecture. Surrounded by mountains such as Mt. Gassan and Mt. Hayama to the south, the village's center is concentrated at the northern end of the village, near the Mogami River. In ancient times, it boasted a very large port for shipping on the Mogami River, and in the Middle Ages, with the construction of Shimizu Castle, it flourished as the center of feudal domain management in the southern Mogami region. The Funagata Kaido road also ran through the village, a pilgrimage route to the Dewa Sanzan mountains. Sake brewing is also carried out in the surrounding area, and Hijiori Onsen, located further south, is popular as a therapeutic hot spring resort. The village's main industries are agriculture and sake brewing, and it is known as one of the nation's leading tomato-producing areas. It is also known for kokeshi doll manufacturing, and tourism, including Hijiori Onsen, is thriving.
