About Yusa Town
Yuza Town, Akumi District, is located in the northernmost part of Yamagata Prefecture, at the northern end of the Shonai Plain. To the north of the town is Mount Chokai, the second highest mountain in the Tohoku region, while the Shonai Plain and Gekko River lie in the center. The southern coastline is lined with sandy beaches known as popular swimming spots. The northern coastline is lined with rocky reefs, creating ideal fishing grounds. The area has a long history, dating back to the founding of Omonoki Shrine, dedicated to Omonokimi-no-kami, between the 2nd and 6th centuries. The shrine is designated a national historic site and attracts many tourists. Other tourist attractions include Mount Sugisawa, designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, and the Yuza Little New Year's Day Festival, Ninotaki Valley, and Takase Gorge, also designated as Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties.
