Kainan City is located in the northwestern part of Wakayama Prefecture and was formed through a merger in 2005. The city boasts three highway interchanges, all JR express trains stop here, and easy access from Kansai International Airport, making it an extremely convenient city. The year-round warm climate allows for the cultivation of many mandarin oranges and loquats. The coastal areas are also rich in seafood, including shirasu and wakame seaweed. Furthermore, the city is famous as the birthplace of Kishu lacquerware, a rare example of Japanese lacquerware, and is known nationwide as a fine traditional craft.
