About Taiji Town
Taiji Town, Higashimuro District, Wakayama Prefecture, is located on Cape Futamata, which juts out into the Kumano Sea. It is the smallest town in Wakayama Prefecture. It's said to be the birthplace of whaling in Japan and is known as a whale town. Even after commercial whaling was banned by the IWC, the town continued to hunt pilot whales, which are outside its jurisdiction, within catch limits and fishing seasons determined by government resource surveys. Whale dishes are still enjoyed as a local specialty. Tourist attractions include the Whale Museum and Hiramidai Park. The Whale Museum, in particular, is a popular spot for families and school groups, offering information on the history of Taiji Town and whales, as well as dolphin and killer whale shows and a whale-feeding area.
