About Yuasa Town
Yuasa Town in Arita County faces the Kii Channel and is home to the Road to Kumano, a registered World Heritage Site. It's said to be the birthplace of Yuasa soy sauce, and the brewing industry is thriving here. The nostalgic townscape still remains, and the area is now protected as an Important Traditional Building. Its main specialties include shirasu (whitebait) and narezushi (fermented sushi). Narezushi is a local dish of the region, and is as famous nationwide as sandfish sushi. Its distinctive feature is that it is fermented naturally without the use of vinegar. Most of the shirasu shipped in Wakayama Prefecture is caught in this region. In addition to these foods, the area also focuses on cultivating citrus fruits.
