Toyama City, Toyama Prefecture, borders Namekawa City, Nagano Prefecture, and Gifu Prefecture, and faces the Sea of Japan to the north. It has also been certified by the government as an environmental model city. Looking back at the city's history, the current "city" was formed in 2005 through a merger of seven municipalities. It is a region rich in nature, with mountains, rivers, and lakes. Traditional crafts include Toyama glass art and Etchu washi paper. Specialties include pears, grapes, and figs, and the city is active in agriculture as well as fishing, including glass shrimp and firefly squid. Trout sushi is a popular souvenir. Tourist attractions include the Toyama City Science Museum, which has a planetarium, the Toyama Prefectural Museum of Modern Art, and Toyama City Family Park, which is home to many animals, all of which attract many tourists.
