About Tottori City
Tottori City, Tottori Prefecture, is located in the Tottori Plain, which opens up into the Sendai River basin. Long ago, it flourished as a castle town of the Tottori Domain, with a fief of 320,000 koku. Since becoming a city in 1889, it has continued to develop as the prefectural capital and a core city in the Sanin region. While the city's most famous tourist spot is the Tottori Sand Dunes, the largest in Japan, it also boasts many other sites where visitors can experience nature and history, such as Hakuto Beach, known as a lovers' paradise; the Tottori Ruins, a symbol of the former castle town; and the white Western-style building Jinpukaku. Other famous local products include seafood such as rock oysters and Matsuba crabs, as well as sand dune shalakkyo (scallions) and the 20th Century Pear, which has recently been featured frequently on TV and in magazines.
