Tokushima City is located in northeastern Shikoku and is the prefectural capital of Tokushima Prefecture. It once flourished as the castle town of the Tokushima Domain. Furthermore, during the late Edo period, the city was successful in the indigo industry, boasting a population among the top 10 in Japan as a castle town. Even today, it remains the largest city not only in the prefecture but in the entire Shikoku region. The Awa Odori dance is a well-known event representing the city.
