The name Makinohara City comes from the plateau known as the Makinohara Plateau. This plateau is known as Shizuoka Prefecture's leading tea-producing region. Due to the thriving tea cultivation, agriculture plays an important role in the city's industry. Fishing and manufacturing are also included in the city's industries. The fishing industry is famous for its abundant seaweed harvest, such as wakame seaweed and habanori seaweed. Beaches are prominent tourist spots in the city, one of which is Sagara Sun Beach. Behind Sagara Sun Beach is a row of black pine trees, creating a beautiful sight. City events include the Vitamin Walk in Jitogata and the Katsumata Castle Ruins Festival.
