Atami City is the easternmost city in Shizuoka Prefecture, formed in 1889 by the merger of several villages. The city's topography is hilly, and although many villas stand here, most roads are sloped. Located 120 kilometers from Tokyo, the city is highly valued by politicians and government officials due to its numerous hot springs, and is also popular as a place to enjoy hot springs on day trips. Transportation is also convenient, with most trains departing from Atami going to Tokyo Station, so the city is often treated as part of the Kanto region. Since the majority of industries are hospitality tourism and hot springs, first-time visitors will feel at ease.
