About Tsuwano Town
Tsuwano Town, Kanoashi District, is located in the southwest of Shimane Prefecture, bordering two other cities and two in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Once a thriving castle town, the townscape retains a Little Kyoto feel. The town is blessed with a rich natural environment, with the Takatsu River and Tsuwano River flowing through it and numerous mountains, including Mt. Aono and Mt. Onikobu. Mamecha (bean tea) is a local specialty, and products such as mamecha yokan and mamecha rice crackers are sold here. The town is also home to Washihara Hachiman Shrine, with its 600-year history. The 270-meter-long Yabusame (horseback archery) arena is a popular tourist attraction and has been designated a National Important Cultural Property. The Gion Festival, held every July, features a dance called Sagimai, designated a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
