Maibara City, Shiga Prefecture, is located in the center of the prefecture's northeastern region. Mount Ibuki, one of Japan's 100 most famous mountains, lies to the northeast, while Mount Reisen towers to the south. Approximately 63% of the city's 50.46 square kilometers is covered by forests. Water stored in these forests becomes the Amano River and the clear Anegawa River, which flow through the city and empty into Lake Biwa. Maibara's tourist attractions include Sekigahara Warland, a faithful recreation of the famous Battle of Sekigahara, and Seiryuji Tokugenin Temple, where beautiful autumn foliage can be seen. Local specialties include trout raised at Japan's oldest trout farm, Samegai Trout Farm, and the bright yellow Kintaro cucurbit fruit. The Kintaro cucurbit fruit is extremely popular with tourists due to its novelty.
