Shiraoka City is located approximately 40km from central Tokyo, making it a commuter town. The city's population boomed from the 1960s to the 1990s. Since the 1980s, new town development has been underway, and in recent years, condominium construction has been underway. Shiraoka City is also a major producer of pears, ranking first in the prefecture. Tourist attractions include the Tobu Super Pool, Kamakura Kaido, Tobu Zoo, and the Saitama Prefecture-designated historic site of Ichirizuka. Events include the Hachiman Shrine Rice Planting Festival and the Shiraoka Citizens' Sports Festival. Lunchtime concerts are also held regularly.
