About Imari City
Imari City, located in western Saga Prefecture, surrounds Imari Bay on three sides, spanning the southwestern part of the Higashimatsuura Peninsula and the southeastern part of the Kitamatsuura Peninsula. It borders Nagasaki Prefecture to the west and is surrounded by hilly terrain to the east. Long ago, the city flourished as a ceramic shipping port, and Hizen porcelain was known in Europe as Imari ware. In addition to being a shipping port, the Nabeshima Domain kiln in Okawachiyama produced the highest quality Nabeshima ware as tribute gifts. Ceramic production continues to this day, and the city is also developing an industrial park, taking advantage of its proximity to Imari Port. Rice, green onions, pears, and grapes are also thriving agriculturally. The Imari and Arita Pottery Traditional Industry Hall, where you can learn about the history of Imari ware, is a popular tourist spot.
