Sumiyoshi Ward, Osaka City, is located in the north of the city, and its flower is the Japanese iris. Tourist attractions include Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine, which is crowded with many visitors every year for the first shrine visit of the year; Bandaiike Park, where cherry blossoms bloom beautifully along the pond in spring; and Ikune Shrine. Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine has also been selected as one of Osaka's 100 Green Areas. Sumiyoshi Ward, Osaka City, offers excellent transportation access by train and bus. The ward also places great emphasis on education, with Osaka's only secondary school. Residential development has been active in the ward, and the majority of the area is now used as residential land. However, there is still a small amount of farmland, which is used for agriculture. The ward's name was formerly written as Sumiyoshi and pronounced "Suminoe."
