Yufu City was established in 2005 through the merger of the towns of Yufuin, Hasama, and Shonai in Oita County. Neighboring municipalities include Oita City, Usa City, and Beppu City. It is famous for its hot springs, including Yufuin Onsen, Yuhira Onsen, and Tsukahara Onsen. Tourist attractions include the Kyushu Retro Motor Museum, the Yufuin Motorcycle Museum, and Taishogun Park. The observation deck at Sagiridai offers a panoramic view of the Yufuin Basin and the town of Yufuin, attracting many tourists. The city hosts the Yufuin Music Festival in July, the Yufuin Film Festival and the Yufu City Hasama Fireworks Festival in August, and the Beef-Eating Scream Contest in October. It was also the setting for the NHK TV drama series, Wind Haruka. The city's tree is the glauca, its flower is the cosmos, and its bird is the Japanese bush warbler.
