Nakatsu City is located in the northernmost part of Oita Prefecture, bordering Fukuoka Prefecture. 80% of the town is mountain forest, and most of the plains are farmland. The climate is warm throughout the year, making it a very comfortable place to live. In winter, the influence of the monsoons can make for strong winds and many cloudy days, but there is no snowfall. Major attractions include the Nakatsu Catholic Church and the Nirvana Statue at Yamenzan Jingoji Temple. The Catholic Church is a cathedral built in 1938, and you can see vibrant stained glass. The Nirvana Statue at Yamenzan Jingoji Temple is a large Buddha statue that took six years to complete. It is rare to see the Buddha reclining.
