Tsubame City, Niigata Prefecture, is located almost in the center of the Echigo Plain and is an extremely well-connected city with excellent transportation access, thanks to the Hokuriku Expressway and the Joetsu Shinkansen. Its main specialties are metal processed products such as metal Western-style tableware and forged copperware, making Tsubame one of Japan's leading metal processing centers. Its main event is the Bunsui Oiran Dochu, a popular festival that receives many applications from within and outside the prefecture each year for the role of oiran. The sight of four oiran walking through the streets amidst a profusion of cherry blossoms, accompanied by 70 attendants performing tekomai and kamuro dances, is a spectacular sight that attracts many tourists every year. The Shuten-doji Procession, a festival of yokai spirits, is also held annually, making the city a place with many unique events unlike any other region.
