About Nishikan Ward, Niigata City
Nishikan Ward, Niigata City, is located southwest of Niigata City. It was established in 2007 as a new district, consisting of six areas, including the Maki district. Surrounded by abundant natural beauty, including the sea, mountains, and plains, the west boasts a beautiful coastline overlooking the Sea of Japan, as well as the magnificent peaks of Mt. Kakuta and Mt. Taho. The area's agricultural industry is thriving, making the most of its vast farmland by taking advantage of the region's abundant natural environment to cultivate delicious rice, melons, watermelons, and radishes in the sand dunes, and vegetables and fruit on the flatlands. A highlight of Nishiura Ward is Mt. Kakuta, where visitors can observe the natural wildflowers and plants. This famous mountain, both within and outside the prefecture, is visited by approximately 130,000 climbers annually. Seven hiking trails, including the Fukui Firefly Village Trail and the Lighthouse Trail, lead to the summit.
