About Nagaoka City
Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture, is located almost in the center of Niigata Prefecture, with the Shinano River, Japan's longest river, flowing leisurely through the city. Inspired by the "Spirit of One Hundred Sacks of Rice" of Torasaburo Kobayashi, a senior councilor of the Nagaoka domain, the city has risen from past disasters and strives to build a stronger city. Facing the ocean, Nagaoka City is known for its fresh seafood dishes, such as hamayaki (grilled seafood) and crab ramen. Recently, Tochio's deep-fried tofu has also been frequently featured on television. The highlight of Nagaoka City is the Nagaoka Festival, held annually from August 1st to 3rd. The grand fireworks display on the 2nd and 3rd is particularly impressive, featuring spectacular displays such as the Shosan-shakudama fireworks and the Phoenix Fireworks, a display to pray for recovery from the earthquake. This festival attracts many tourists from outside the prefecture, making it a well-known event.
