Omura City is located in the center of Nagasaki Prefecture, on the western foot of the Tara Mountains, on the eastern shore of Omura Bay. The Omura Plain is one of the few large swathes of flat land in the prefecture. Its central location provides easy access to Nagasaki City and Sasebo, and it also functions as a commuter town, with residential and condominium development currently underway. Omura also serves as the air gateway to Nagasaki Prefecture, thanks to the presence of Nagasaki Airport. It was formerly a castle town ruled by the Christian feudal lord Omura Sumitada, and flourished as a military city from the Meiji to Showa periods. Nagasaki Airport is also famous as the first offshore airport after the war, and is currently being developed as a base for access to various parts of Asia.
