About Minamishimabara City
Minamishimabara City, Nagasaki Prefecture, is located in the southern part of the prefecture. Bordering Shimabara City to the northeast and Unzen City to the northwest, the city was formed in 2006 through the merger of eight towns. The region is rich in nature, with mountains and rivers. Agriculture, including tomatoes and potatoes, and fishing, including rockfish and shrimp, are thriving. A specialty product is Shimabara hand-stretched somen noodles. As you'd expect from a prefecture with a strong sports culture, the area boasts numerous gymnasiums and athletic parks. Tourist attractions include numerous historical sites, including the site of the Shimabara Rebellion, the Seibo Memorial Hall, which displays works by Kitamura Seibo, castle ruins, and a beach. Town events include the Ariehama Kora Festival, held in the summer.
