Shinkamigoto Town, Minamimatsuura District, Nagasaki Prefecture, was formed through a merger in 2004. Purse seine fishing and fixed net fishing have revitalized the industry. These fisheries produce an abundance of horse mackerel, squid, flying fish, and grunt. In addition to seafood, the town also produces many processed foods, with udon noodles and mame yokan (bean jelly bean paste) being popular local specialties. There are also many historical sites scattered throughout the town, including the unique Kaido Shrine, whose torii gate is made from a whale bone, and the Arikawa Kagura and Kamigoto Kagura dances, both designated as intangible folk cultural properties.
