About Kawatana Town
Kawatana Town, Higashisonogi District, is located in the central part of Nagasaki Prefecture, facing Omura Bay to the west. Historically, the town was a farming and fishing village, but the construction of the Kawatana Naval Arsenal during World War II led to a period of rapid population growth. Even today, the town still retains ruins and monuments related to the naval arsenal and the navy, and the former naval arsenal site is currently attracting factories from major companies. The town's main industries are agriculture and fishing, with rice, tomatoes, mandarin oranges, and strawberries thriving in agriculture, and mantis shrimp and sea cucumbers caught in Omura Bay being sold in the fishing industry. The Kiba Hyuga rice terraces have been selected as one of Japan's 100 best rice terraces and are a popular tourist spot within the town. Other attractions include Osaki Natural Park.
