In addition to neighboring cities and towns in Nagano Prefecture, Tomi City also borders Tsumagoi Village in Gunma Prefecture, bringing the total number of neighboring municipalities to five. Tomi City has a city butterfly, designated as the Blue-and-White butterfly. There are many rivers within the city, including the Chikuma River, Nishikawa River, and Narusawa River. The city is known for its agriculture, including walnuts and grapes. Walnut production in particular is among the highest in the prefecture. The city is also home to the Yunomaru Kogen Ski Resort, which also benefits the city economically during the ski season. City events include the Kyoho Kingdom Festival and the Tomi City Children's Festival.
