Anan Town, Shimoina District, is located in the central part of Nagano Prefecture, surrounded by the Southern and Central Alps and blessed with a rich natural environment. Characterized by dramatic elevation changes and rugged terrain, the area is made up of a total of 56 settlements. The entire town is covered in forest, and agriculture is the mainstay of the community. Residential areas account for about 10% of the area. The area hosts many events and ceremonies throughout the year, including the "Gyonin-sama Gokaicho" (Opening of the Gyonin-sama), held in the spring, the day before Respect for the Aged Day. The sight of a living mummy (sokushinbutsu) is particularly striking. There are many other similar long-standing events.
