Kiso Town, Kiso District, is located in the central part of Nagano Prefecture. It borders Matsumoto City, Shiojiri City, Ina City, and Takamatsu City and Gero City in Gifu Prefecture. The town was newly formed in 2005 through the merger of one town and three villages. Tourist attractions include the remains of Fukushima Barrier, one of the four major barriers, the Nakasendo Upper Step, Mt. Ontake, and the Yamamura Magistrate's Residence. There is a museum at the remains of Fukushima Barrier, where you can learn about the history of the area. In winter, you can enjoy winter sports at Kiso Fukushima Ski Resort, Kaida Kogen Myas Ski Resort, and Kisokoma Kogen Ski Resort. Events in the town include the "Mikoshimamakuri" festival, where a portable shrine (mikoshi) is rolled around in the summer.
