About Matsumoto City
Matsumoto City is located in central Nagano Prefecture, in the central part of the Koshin region. It has also been designated a special city and an international conference and tourism city. In 2005, four villages were incorporated, and in 2010, one town was incorporated to form the new Matsumoto City. The city is home to Matsumoto Castle, a national treasure. Long ago, the city flourished as a castle town around Matsumoto Castle, and having escaped war damage, many historical buildings remain to this day. It is also home to Kaichi School, Japan's oldest elementary school, and the city's catchphrase includes "learning," demonstrating its dedication to education. Agricultural products include rice, apples, grapes, watermelons, and various vegetables, and the city also boasts a thriving industrial sector. Cultural assets include Matsumoto Castle, Kaichi School, the Baba Family Residence, and the main hall of Chikuma Shrine.
