About Takachiho Town
Takachiho Town, Nishiusuki District, is located in the northern tip of Miyazaki Prefecture, in the Kyushu Mountains. It borders Hinokage Town, Gokase Town, and Morotsuka Village, as well as cities and towns in Oita and Kumamoto Prefectures. Agriculture is thriving here, with sweet peas, shiitake mushrooms, ripe kumquats, and terraced rice cultivated. Until 2008, the train service ran between Amanoiwato Station and Takachiho Station, but it is no longer in operation. Tourist attractions include Takachiho Gorge, a nationally designated scenic spot; Kunimigaoka, a famous spot for seas of clouds; and Takachiho Shrine. Takachiho Town's traditional performing arts include Takachiho's Night Kagura and the folk song Kariboshikiriuta, designated as Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties of Japan. Takachiho's Night Kagura is performed from mid-November to early February.
