Approximately 78% of Nichinan City's forests are covered with Obi cedar, a local specialty. Obi cedar is light, strong, and has low water absorption, making it ideal for shipbuilding. Tourist attractions include the Obi Townscape, designated an Important Preservation District for Traditional Buildings, Nichinan Coast Quasi-National Park, and Udo Shrine. Obi Townscape is also known as Kyushu's Little Kyoto. Local specialties include cactus steak, thick omelet, and obi-ten. Obi-ten is made by mincing sardines, horse mackerel, and mackerel caught in the waters off the Hyuga Sea, mixing them with tofu and seasonings, and deep-frying them. Nichinan City Tenpuku Baseball Stadium serves as a training camp for the Hiroshima Toyo Carp in spring and autumn.
