Takahara Town, Nishimorokata District, is famous as the place where the legend of the descent of the heavenly grandson is told. The town's official bird is the bush warbler, known for its beautiful feathers, ranging from ultramarine to blue. The town borders Miyakonojo and Kobayashi in Miyazaki Prefecture, and Kirishima in Kagoshima Prefecture. The town is home to the 1,500-meter-high Mount Takachiho and other magnificent natural sites, including the crater lake, Oike. Mount Takachiho and Oike are both famous landmarks in the town. The town also boasts a hot spring called Yunomoto Onsen, which is a bicarbonate spring. The town also hosts events such as the Kirishima Mountaineering Marathon.
