Kushima City, Miyazaki Prefecture, is located at the southernmost tip of the prefecture. It also once served as the spring training camp for the Chunichi Dragons, making it a popular destination for baseball fans. Tourist attractions in Kushima include Koshima Island, famous for its Japanese macaques washing sweet potatoes, and the Toi-misaki East Lighthouse, one of Japan's 50 best lighthouses. One of the city's specialty products is the Yamadaikansho sweet potato, which can be eaten both in leaves and seedlings and is said to have a balanced nutritional profile. Under a contract with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the city is constantly developing new varieties of sweet potatoes suited to the space environment.
