The town of Mimata in Kitamorokata District is integrated with Miyakonojo City, one of its neighboring municipalities, and has strong ties with the city. Other neighboring municipalities include Miyazaki City and Nichinan City. Mimata Town in Kitamorokata District was in discussions about merging with another municipality during the Heisei Great Merger, but decided not to merge due to its desire to maintain its independence as a municipality. The town is home to Atelier Road, an area beloved by potters, which has been renamed Atelier Road and promoted as a tourist spot. The town also hosts many events, such as the Cherry Blossom Festival and the Azalea Festival.
