Shiroishi City, located in the southern part of Miyagi Prefecture, is blessed with abundant nature, including the Zao mountain range and the Shiroishi River. A variety of agricultural practices are carried out in this blessed natural environment, including rice cultivation, fruit farming, dairy farming, and highland vegetable cultivation. Numerous ruins from the Jomon and Yayoi periods have also been excavated. Shiroishi Castle is a popular tourist attraction. Built as a subsidiary castle for Date Masamune of the Sendai domain, the castle suffered damage, including the collapse of its walls, in the Great East Japan Earthquake, and restoration work was carried out. The Shiroishi Castle Cherry Blossom Festival is held in April, and the castle is lit up in vibrant colors at night. One of the city's specialties is Shiroishi Onmen (warm noodles). The Onmen Museum displays traditional manufacturing methods and materials.
