Located in the center of Miyagi Prefecture, Shiogama City has long flourished as a port town. The fishing industry is thriving, and the city is known as Japan's number one port for landing fresh tuna. Local specialties include fish paste products such as sasa-kamaboko and chikuwa, as well as local sake and nori seaweed. There are also many tourist attractions, including Shiogama Shrine, which has a history of 1,200 years, where you can observe many rare plants. The season in which the Shiogama cherry blossoms bloom in full bloom is particularly popular, attracting many visitors. In October, the Ishinomaki Big Fish Festival is held, featuring a fresh fish auction and concerts. In November, the Kahoku Industry Festival is held, featuring a variety of events, including salmon catching, a raffle, and a mini zoo.
