Wakabayashi Ward, Sendai City, is located in the southeastern part of the city. Rice and vegetable cultivation thrives in Wakabayashi Ward, making it the agricultural center of Sendai City. The historic streets surrounding Wakabayashi Castle, built for Date Masamune in the early 17th century, remain as a castle town. The Roku-chome area is home to the Central Wholesale Market, where fresh seafood and vegetables are traded in a lively atmosphere. The Kinoshita area is home to many ancient temples. The Yakushido Hall and Niomon Gate of Mutsu Kokubunji Temple are visited by many visitors as tourist spots, with their beautiful cherry blossoms in full bloom in spring. The eastern coastal and eastern rural areas of Wakabayashi Ward were severely damaged in the Great East Japan Earthquake, and efforts are underway to rebuild the area.
