Located along the Pacific Ocean, Kesennuma City has a thriving fishing industry. Kesennuma Port boasts the highest fresh bonito landings in Japan, and Kesennuma shark fin is known as a luxury item. The Sea Urchin Festival is held in August, featuring events such as the sale of sea urchin rice bowls and demonstrations of sea urchin shucking. The Kesennuma-Motoyoshi Regional Industry Festival is held in November, attracting many visitors with sales of local products and tastings of fresh seafood and mountain produce. One of the city's specialties is Kesennuma Hormone, grilled pork innards. The Kesennuma Hormone Festival is also held during Obon. Mount Tokusenjo, affectionately known as Kesennuma Citizens' Forest, is a popular tourist destination, with its blooming azaleas and the opportunity to enjoy barbecues and hiking.
