During the Edo period, Iwanuma City flourished as a post town, located at the junction of the Oshu Kaido and Hama Kaido roads. The Oshu Kaido runs along the Abukuma River that flows through the city, offering idyllic views. A cycling road stretching approximately 7 kilometers is also available from Abukuma Bridge. Tourist attractions include Takekoma Shrine and Kinhebisui Shrine. Takekoma Shrine is one of Japan's three great Inari shrines and is visited by many worshippers. A large festival is also held in September. Agriculture is thriving in the city, with rice cultivation and the cultivation of vegetables such as Chinese cabbage, cucumbers, lettuce, and tomatoes, as well as fruit trees such as melons and apples. Local specialties include hand-baked roadside rice crackers and Sendai pickled Chinese cabbage.
