Kumano City is located in the southern part of Mie Prefecture, and its southwestern borders Wakayama and Nara prefectures. Its main industries are fishing, which takes advantage of its natural harbor, forestry, which makes use of its mountain forests, and mandarin orange cultivation, which takes advantage of its warm climate. As a result, its specialty products include dried fish, sanma sushi, and mandarin oranges. Kumano City is rich in nature and boasts many beautiful natural landscapes, and the Kumano Kodo trails, including Matsumoto Pass and Obuki Pass, are registered as World Heritage Sites. The Maruyama Senmaida rice terraces, registered as one of Japan's 100 best rice terraces, are also famous. The 300-year-old Kumano Fireworks Festival is a popular event, attracting many visitors every year. The Futagishima Festival, designated an intangible folk cultural asset of Mie Prefecture, is also famous.
