About Kihoku Town
Kihoku Town in Kitamuro District is located in the southern part of Mie Prefecture, at the southern tip of the Kii Peninsula, and serves as the gateway to eastern Kishu. The Kumano Sea is to the southeast, and the Odai Mountains are to the northwest. Most of the town is covered in forests, making it a lush, green place. The warm, mild climate makes it an extremely livable place. The town is also relatively new, formed in 2005 by the merger of two other towns. Its main industries are fishing and forestry, which takes advantage of the abundant forests. Oysters, dried bonito flakes, processed seafood, cypress, and mandarin oranges are among its local specialties. The town is also famous for the sacred sites and pilgrimage routes of the Kii Mountain Range, a World Heritage Site, making it a popular tourist spot.
