Nantan City, located almost in the center of Kyoto Prefecture, is the second largest city in the prefecture. It was formed in 2006 by the merger of four towns, including Sonobe Town. The four towns continue to work tirelessly to make the most of the natural environment and initiatives they have always been proud of. Nantan City hosts the Seiryu Miyama Ayu Festival every August, where visitors can enjoy the city's specialty, ayu, to their heart's content. The Ikimi Tenmangu Shrine Spring Festival, held in May, also attracts many tourists, who can see the adorable children's mikoshi (portable shrine) and children's procession. On this day, local elementary schools hold a special half-day session, and many children looking forward to the festival gather at the stalls lined up in the square.
