Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City, is located in the northwestern part of the city and is the largest of the city's 11 wards. The Katsura River and Tenjin River flow through the ward, and Mount Atago and Mount Ogura tower above. The ward is blessed with abundant nature. Rice and vegetable cultivation, taking advantage of the pure waters that spring from Mount Atago, 924 meters above sea level, is thriving. Chrysanthemums are also cultivated here. Legend has it that natto was first invented in Ukyo Ward. A local specialty is "natto mochi," a rice cake wrapped in natto. Tourist attractions include Keihoku Forest Park, Keihoku Yamakuni House, Keihoku Sports Park, and Utsukyo Park. Ayu fishing is also available in the Kamikatsura River, attracting many anglers during the season. Josho-koji Temple is known as a famous cherry blossom viewing spot.
