Minami Ward, Kyoto City, is located on the Kyoto Basin, with the Nishitakase River flowing through its center and the Kamo River to the east. It is one of Kyoto City's 11 wards and borders five other wards and one city. Since the establishment of Heian-kyo, this area has long developed as the capital's gateway. Blessed with water resources, agriculture, including Kyoto vegetables, has flourished. The ward is home to numerous historical sites, and is visited by many tourists throughout the year from Japan and around the world. Historic sites include Anrakujuin Temple, Kisshoin Tenmangu Shrine, Jonangu Shrine, and Rokusonno Shrine. The ward's specialty products include Kujo leek, Kyoto carrots, and mizuna (potherb mustard greens). Many traditional Kyoto vegetables are cultivated here.
