Located at the southernmost tip of Kyoto Prefecture, Kizugawa City is a new city formed in 2007 by the merger of three towns, including Kizu Town. Surrounded by history and abundant nature, it was ranked number one in a Kyoto Prefecture ranking of the most livable towns. Recently, with the construction of the Kansai Culture and Arts Research City underway, the city has seen a rapid increase in population as a bed town for Kyoto, Nara, and Osaka. The city is dotted with numerous ruins and buildings that offer a sense of history, and popular tourist spots include the Tsubakii Otsukayama Tomb and the ruins of Kizu Castle. Main local specialties include wild bamboo shoots grown in the lush natural environment and persimmons, known for their large size and sweetness.
